COUNTING CROWS & LIVE
Greek Theatre
Berkeley, CA.
9/23/2000
Wow!! That was live. What a great venue, what a great night, and what a great crowd! Oh yeah, not to mention, what a great view for a spectacular sunset over the San Francisco Bay. Aaaah! The Greek Theatre at UC Berkeley, always brings back the fondest memories of days gone by and holds strong and true as a historic place for all great bands to make their seasonal migrations. Berkeley was bumping, traffic was hell, and parking was the usual nightmare; and all this is somehow always magically forgotten on the way home from a fantastic show at the Greek. Oh, did I say anything about the two great bands that just completely raged for two nights with nearly packed house crowds at the Greek Theatre this last weekend. For those of you who are not in the know, I'm talking about Live and the Counting Crows.
I'm a big live music fan, I don't go for most of the album rock and studio cuts. I like it live, uncut and full of raw sound. I've even been hearing a buzz for a couple of years now about this band Live. Everyone I know that sees them says they are just a fabulous live band, and I have to agree with them. I hope you don't let the buzz pass you by again this year as this tour is coming your way soon. The action starts out west with several dates in California and heads east and south for a gallop through Texas and then further on into the deep south with a final hoorah in the only third world country in the United States. I'm speaking of the fabulous up all night town of New Orleans and its surrounding parishes. The show started early with an opening band to prime the fans for a great double bill. Live played second and completely stunned me, full of high energy and just pumping the crowd into a frenzy. They switched up their most popular song and played it with a few twists to show off their amazing versatility. The night was still young and the beer was still pouring as the Counting Crows hit the stage. This band is large, lined up across the stage and living large. With great melodies from the past and a very popular new album, we are indeed pleased. Both bands played fairly long sets and the show was bang for the buck worthy. The encore was crazy, the Counting Crows invited Live and anybody backstage that wanted to join in to sing their latest single "Hangingaround." The home town crowd sang along with the entire entourage and the whole thing was a riot to watch. I counted almost thirty people up on the stage---still sounded just right. Were all the microphones turned up, I'll never know. Don't miss this tour folks, it is prime live music. Thanks for reading and we'll see ya at the shows.
