BONNIE RAITT
FUNDAMENTAL TOUR
Greek Theater
Berkeley, CA
9/27/98
Now, here's a girl who is no stranger to the blues, in fact, I'd say she has many friends involved with the blues. Her cohorts ( and, certainly influences too) in the blues of days gone by have been legendary blues masters, such as, Charles Brown, Sippie Wallace, B.B. King, and many more. I like to call her the, "Queen of Slide Guitar." She has been out struttin' her stuff and defending my self-proclaimed title with her very talented band for the better part of this last year; all across the country, and actually several shows here in California. This wonderful and historic show in the Greek Theater at UC Berkeley being the, so to say, the grand finale. The show was absolutely awesome, Bonnie was all smiles and the threat of rain seemed to just, hang at bay, leaving the crowd happy and dry. I do certainly remember turning on the windshield wipers as I drove into Berkeley though. So, I do believe we were very fortunate to not get wet on this fantastic gray day.NICK RUNNINGShe opened the show with My Love's Got No Business Calling Your Name, Loveletter, and also did Good Man. Then she did some tracks from Fundamental, her latest release. Meet Me Halfway was great, after that, she pulled out an acoustic guitar and played solo Round and Round by Willie Dixon which is also on her new album. Hutch Hutchinson came out to join Bonnie for a song about a country girl. That's when things really got to rocking and Bonnie went to wailing that slide guitar, and everybody's feets wents to jumping. She cranked out the title track from Fundamental, The Fundamental Things, and then did her classic tune Something To Talk About; and back to the new album with the most ripping new original song The Spit of Love. Next, was a most moving a capella version of I Can't Make You Love Me; followed by, a fully electric That's Just Love Sneaking Up On You. Bonnie ended the show with a second encore, the ever enjoyable Are You Ready For a Thing Called Love.
If you love Bonnie Raitt I hope you didn't miss this last tour, because she and her band are in top forum, plus, you never know how long iot will be before she'll tour the whole country again. But, you people fortunate enough to live in northern California can always look forward to seeing Bonnie very soon. As she takes a stand every year, along with many others, to help save the native California Redwood forests which are being cut down by the Maxxam Corporation (who owns much of the existing old growth forests that are still on private land). This is a great way to help save your national heritage and see Bonnie at the same time, so, we'll see you at all those Forest Aid Benefits coming up soon. Thanks for reading and we'll see ya at the shows.
