WARFIELD THEATER
SAN FRANCISCO, CA.
OCTOBER 14, 1999
Good old southern hospitality is always a pleasure to come by, especially when it comes all the way west and north to California. Such would be the case in San Francisco last night in accordance with the appearance of Widespread Panic at the Warfield theater for the first of three sold out shows. Along with the band arrived a good number of their more devout listeners (that most likely come from the south) and with them they brought a whole mess of that southern hospitality that I'm talking about. A good crowd always helps make a good show. The concert was certainly top notch, the tight overlapping of JB's and Houser's leads spiraling in sonic crescendos out into the expectantly delighted ears of their excited fans was incredible to see and hear. The show started with two super high energy songs and the crowd was jumping like crazy, the light show was awesome with a backdrop of starry night made up of these little star lights that would change color making these southern gents just stand out against the starry sky and it added air of splendor to the whole performance. I feel the highlight of the evening was in the second set with a sweet "Driving'" into a smoking "Pusher Man" and then back into "Driving." This run of songs and the second encore "Ain't Life Grand" seemed to pump the crowd up the most, with the finale sending the whole audience into a flurry of twisting frenzy. J.B. played mandolin and Houser shredded the leads for the last song as Jo Jo was just going off and everybody was to put it mildly, completely freaking out.
Don't miss your chance to catch one of the truly spontaneous bands that delivers a completely different show for their fans (following in the tradition of the Grateful Dead) every time they play, and see Widespread Panic when they come to your town. Also, they have a great new album that just came out this year, if you don't already have it--get it, got it, good. Music makes the world go around, keep the faith. Thanks for reading and we'll see y'all at the shows.
