TOUR OF
AMERICA
4/5/2002
COMPAQ CENTER
SAN JOSE, CA.
What a show!!! The tour of America is the stuffff!! I wish I could see them all, but I do think this show in San Jose was the best on the tour though. Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young played their second night in the bay area on friday night (Oakland on thursday) and straight kicked ass. The tour is all over the western U.S. for the next three weeks folks, don't miss out this time around. The backdrop was all letters and pieces of paper; I'm assuming they all were pertaining to loved ones lost on 9/11/2001. It created this great effect with the lighting that made the wall seem to come to life and breathe a little. The whole performance was something to be cherished, certainly a gem for the memory pocket, and one to be pulled out once in awhile and passed around the room for smiles. The show opened with "Questions," "Carry On" and "Military Madness." The "Carry On" was simply awesome and they all looked great. Hippie Anthems from eras and generations gone by. I listened to the ironies as the the lyrics fit right into today, timeless lessons of man. Leaving me to conclude this set list was not drawn from a hat, but by design was to provoke thought and concsience. Neil was wearing his farmer john straw hat with his locks all getting super long again. You could just see him plowing the fields on a Harley, well, my imagination is a little overactive, but anyway. They ended the first set with a full on "Down by the River" and it was out of this world. The appetizers all devoured, the second set on the plate as Stephen Stills took the lead for, the always a melodious treat, "Helplessly Hoping.
This song always leaves me jaw dropped and breathless to see him still sounding so good after all these years. He really takes the cake on this one and puts the cherry on the top too. The harmonies flowed right on out with "Our House," Graham of course taking the lead for that one and then Neil came out to the front to take the lead vocal on "Old Man." Then, David came out and laid his beautiful "Guinivere" out for all to hear. From there it went to a tune that I think was a new David Crosby tune, posibly titled "Alone on the East Shore," but I'm not sure about that one. Then, Neil did a wonderful "Harvest Moon," I alway love that one and it sounds even better with a full band. Stephen came back out to the front and let the crowd know the keys were being played by the esteemed Booker T and that he was going to take his life in his own hands and attempt to adjust one of Booker's songs.
The result was the stirring of "Old Man Trouble," sumtin' that'll leave the body a jumping in the shoes. A common side effect of the blues, you all watch out now, ya hear, or you'll catch a these blues and be a jumpin' in a your shoes too. The highpoints for the rest of the show were Neil's new song "Let's Roll," "Long Time Coming," and "Woodstock." I think there was another new song in there called "See No Evil, Fear No Evil," but again I'm not sure about that one either. They ended the show with a spectacular "Rocking In The Free World" and encored with a tune that speaks volumes about death, and hate, and war..."Ohio." Thanks for reading and we'll see ya at the shows.
