OZZFEST 2001
SHORELINE AMPHITHEATRE
MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA.
6/29/01

The collaborative efforts of Mr. Ozzy Osbourne and his wife Sharon to promote the many up and coming bands roaming the planet showed to be a total success again this summer. Proving year in and year out with towering concert revenues that heavy metal is not dead. Surely, rock is dead, or so Marilyn Manson would lead you to believe. Ozzy Osbourne is living proof that heavy metal will not die. For those confused by all this, Rocktime does assure all the faithful that rock is not dead and will certainly last throughout all of time. This year's festival marks the sixth year of the annual Ozzfest migration of freaks and hairies. You just gotta love it! The bottom line is anywhere Black Sabbath plays the house is going to be packed...if only I had a dollar for every Black Sabbath freak out there...I could spend it all catching Black Sabbath every time they play...

There is only one explanation for all this frenzy though, I cannot put it any plainer than this "Black Sabbath rules!!!" You know, I know it, and all who bear witness are not far behind to realize. The Ozzfest is always more than a production, every year it gets better. Complete with fetish girl picture booths and air brush your tits artists available on site. There is a signing booth to the left of the second stage and you can possibly meet your favorite band there. Linkin Park signed autographs most graciously for almost a full hour at the bay area show here at Shoreline. This was I think a rare treat for all who came to the festival this year, the line was incredibly long and still not everybody could get in before the cut-off point. Linkin Park must have signed well over three thousand autographs each. That was only an hour before they were due on the main stage to play their set. I surely did not want to be these gutarist's hands after signing all those John Does and then having to play the guitar. My hand gets sore just from signing all the checks at the end of the month to pay the bills. These guys wouldn't let on that pain was killing them as they set the stage ablaze. Leaving behind fans for life as when they left the stage the crowd was open mouthed and amazed at the raw energy of Linkin Park. The crowd was talking and the mention was Linkin Park all the way up until the moment we had all been waiting for, The moment of Black Sabbath.

Zakk Wylde is certainly a nice enough and polite enough guy when you meet him, but all the dissapears when you throw a guitar in his hands and put him in front of people. You get something a little different, something a little Wylder. A ferrocious onslaught of speed metal inspired by the abuse of too much alcohol and the celebration of women who don't, won't, or can't say no. I say everything in moderation, eh. Crazy Town knocked some heads around afer that with their tattooed charisma the crowd was moving to the sounds of mayhem. The band Disturbed who was bumped from second stage to the main stage because the opening day of Ozzfest 2001 a sold out crowd in Chicago of twenty thousand people rocked the second stage declaring that these guys are a main stage act. They have a a little hype and drama before their frontman bursts out from within his cage and then they blast in to their loud and angry music, it all fit right in with the genre of music for the day.

The crowd was completely filled in from the lawn seating area down to the front row by this time. Linkin Park came out rocking with no time to waste, too many songs and not enough time to play them all for these nice folk. I would like to see Linkin Park out on a headlining U.S. tour sometime in the near future. Papa Roach let everyone know he was a veteran of the stage with his patented angry looks and tough lyrics. What can I say about Slipknot, to be sure, they are making money. But, are they making music? I wouldn't bet on it, but hey, this act is actually wierder than Marilyn Manson's brand of strange habits. Manson took the stage flaunting a brilliant black feathered Indian headdress and screaming like a banshee from hell. Pretty good show for hate and anger music, the fact remains that Marilyn Manson was grotesquely delightful after an hour with Slipknot. The rest is history folks as Black Sabbath stepped to the stage and laid all other bands to waste. Thanks for reading, and we'll see ya at the shows.
