Blues Traveler and Ben Harper with the Innocent Criminals are certainly two bands on the horizon of rock and roll. Ben Harper with his eclectic style and improvisational lap guitar work; and the Blues Traveler with guitar virtuoso Chan Kinchla, and the awe-inspiring harmonica genius and lightning fast lyrics which come like a storm from John Popper's long winded and well trained vocal force. So, fitting the profile, these two bands headlined at this year's H.O.R.D.E. festival. Other performers included in the 1998 line-up were Galactic, the Barenaked Ladies, Alana Davis, and many more; as there were three stages at the H.O.R.D.E. festival, and continuous music from 4:30 pm until 11:00 pm.NICK RUNNINGBen Harper played a little after 8:00 pm on the main stage, which is set on a bluff overlooking the Columbia river gorge. His music is mostly original songs, but, he also did great version of Jimi Hendrix's Voodoo Chile. Blues Traveler took the stage just before ten o'clock and opened with "Stand" and "Crash & Burn," both are songs from their fourth album, properly entitled Four. They were joined by a member of the Barenaked Ladies for these two songs and he left the stage after the fourth song Blues Traveler's classic hit "But, Anyway." Then, Traveler did their standard, but, always enjoyable number "Mountains Win Again." Next, came Chan's solo and then John Popper saying, "We figured it was time to write a new song, 'cause, ya know that's what we do, we write songs." It was called, "Decision of the Skies." Bassist Billy Sheehan and guitarist Chan both beat their axes in extended dual solos, followed by a very unexpected "Papa Was a Rolling Stone." Overall, the H.O.R.D.E. festival was a fantastic time, hope you didn't miss it. Thanks for reading and we'll see ya at the shows.
