ARCO ARENA
SACRAMENTO, CA.
Rock and roll never sleeps... but those dedicated to the preservation of it's immortality, however, must at least take a nap. Coming to California with this cold snap comes the runny noses and the flu, oh no, I'm down with the sickness. Riding the tail end of a false spring and driving in with the fierce cold comes Incubus to the ARCO Arena in Sacramento. I have to admit I was quite surprised to find more people in the venue when I walked in than were at any King's game this season. That's not an easy feat as the King's have had a completely sold out season and just won the NBA Western Conference Division title. The Kings were no match for this formidable force in rock and roll as Incubus sold out the ARCO Arena. Jam packed, I think is the correct term, as the jam started right on time with the opening act Hoobastank. A way higher attendance was recorded than at basketball games because the floor had no seats and it was just teaming with sixteen year old girls and boys just dying to get to the front rail.

I do hope that "dying" was not the operative word as the mosh pits at these shows can be pretty rough. I could only think of my own daughter coming to concerts like this as I watched an unconscious girl being wheeled to an ambulance on a stretcher. This was during the opening act, this poor girl didn't even get to see Incubus at all. Be careful out there folks, if you weigh more than one hundred and eighty pounds, or are over twenty years old, than you probably shouldn't be smashing these youngsters around  in the mosh pit. Another consideration when near the mosh pit is that alcohol and moshing mix to create assured ambulance rides for young people who don't even see it coming as they are mowed down by out of control moshers. So, please pit rockers, let's keep it safe out there for the rest of us rock and rollers. Even us old ones who want to be able to let their kids participate in the most wonderful form of entertainment in the world... live music.

The show was really good and the price was more than right. Incubus has definitely got the friendly "spread the music" vibe. They were practically giving these tickets away, the face value on every ticket was under twenty five dollars including the ticket service charges. I respect that a lot in an industry overrun with constant inflation and beaten down by the ever shrinking concert dollar. This was probably the most likely reason this show sold out. I mean this show was on a monday night, and the venue was filled with young children who had to be in school the next day. Most of these kids probably did extra chores, gave up their allowance, did all their homework in advance and kissed parental ass for weeks to be able to see this concert on a school night. I say kudos to you, the young fans, who worked their parents real hard to achieve this one glorious night of music. I think that Incubus gave them everything they worked for too as the show was over three hours long.

The stage lights and multimedia presentation were both superb. Multiple video screens and these great starry night backdrops on both sides of the stage gave way for some awesome visual effects. The lighting techs outdid themselves with abundant usage of deep purples and greens that were just out of this world. Incubus did songs from all of their recorded releases including "Nice to Know You, " "Pardon Me, "Wish You Were Here" and "I Miss You." They did this acoustic set and these couches were pulled forward from the back of the stage. The band  just kind of kicked it, and played music sitting down as if they weren't performing for a massive live audience. The acoustic songs sounded really good and then the roadies pushed back the couches and the electric wailing continued. The encore was kind of weird, they did this Kitaro sounding piece, but  with instruments not synthesizers. Overall, these guys are righteous. If you haven't checked them out yet, then maybe you ought to soon. Thanks for reading and we'll see ya at the shows.
