STRING CHEESE INCIDENT
GREEK THEATRE
BERKELEY, CA.
8/4/2001

What a bunch of freaks!!! I say that with the most abundant love and admiration for all the freaks and hairies who came out to play on this great day. This was the second of two nights at the Greek Theatre for the String Cheese Incident. The buzz and hype all seemed to be about the concert with on site camping and four days of the String Cheese Incident in rural Oregon, sounds like a great place for a family affair. Camping, music, love, and nature at Hornings hideout. The incident was quite indelible on this warm saturday night in Berkeley, the view from the top of the venue of the whole bay and the setting sun over the city. A brilliant and breathtaking token of the things that make living in the bay area worth the higher cost of living and endless traffic.

The crowd was a stream of familiar faces and a pleasant reminder of days gone past, faces bright with the promise of shaking bones. Smiles slowly passing between strangers that have seen familiar faces. In another time's not so forgotten space these friendly strangers have danced the night away on many an occasion. In a week heavy with joy and sorrow, birth and death. A bond that will not fade away is silently expressed in a sense of strong family spirit between the members of the audience and the band. Everybody was wearing their dancing shoes and the crowd was ready to kick up their heels. The show was a little tame in the grand scheme of things as the tour has just hit the north coast and the jam won't really be on fire until this band relaxes into the woods of Oregon.

Bill Nershi was all smiles and seemed to be enjoying playing to such a large bay area crowd, in fact the whole band was seeming quite happy.  When the band took the stage you could see them scanning the audience for friends. The Greek Theatre has great acoustics and the show was pure sonic psychedelic delight. The travelling band of free loving gypsies is alive and thriving as the parking lot above Greeks was complete with a mini shakedown street. Outside the Greek, the same old familiar scene as two hundred people mill around in hopes of a miracle. One poor girl took her chances sneaking in the show and was slightly hysterical about being caught by UC campus police. Might have been the handcuffs though, this tends to make a person a little crazy. Needless to say, when you ain't got no money, a free ticket from the grace of another fan beats going to jail anyday. I was a little envious as we pulled out of the parking lot I wanted to join the tour and party down under the stars. The highlight of the show was definitely the cover of Led Zeppelin's "Ramble On." This is not a song to be sung lightly and the cheese took it on with raging grace as they really nailed the part at the end, "Now is the time, the time is now." Thanks for reading and we'll see ya at the shows.
