The String Cheese Incident
RENO HILTON AMPHITHEATER
RENO , NEVADA
JULY 22, 2000
The String Cheese Incident is out on tour in full force this summer and will soon arrive at a concert venue near you. Their eclectic electric brand of bluegrass is by far some of the best live dancing music available in the World today. Let yourself go, and arouse that funky old soul with the dance of life. This band caters to the crowd who can't stand a band that plays the same tired old set from the night before; over and over again for an entire tour. String Cheese continues to deliver stellar and innovative performances with particular attention devoted to steeliest variation, bringing something fun and new to their audiences performance after performance. This love and devotion is being rewarded by the presence of a small crowd of tour folk who are happy to spend their Summer out on the road enjoying every show this band has to offer. The best of luck to these happy heads, and for Heaven's sake let's be safe and careful out there on the road. Oh, envy! Have fun y'all!!For those of you who have real jobs and can't just take off for the Summer, you can look forward to seeing the String Cheese Incident in a friendly and festive outdoor atmosphere. The show in Reno, Nevada at the Reno Hilton Amphitheater was absolutely FAN-tastic. The weather was perfect; sunny, but not too hot. The show kicked off with an opening band just before 7:00 pm and the Cheese came on stage about 8:00 pm. They lit the show up with "Open Wide" and then did a real nice folky celtic sounding tune and Mike was playing his fiddle with an exuberant smile parting his lips. Then a totally unexpected and unique version of Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Chile" came cranking out of the speakers to the delight of a very happy audience. This was followed up by an island calypso beat with the joyous sounds of "St. Thomas." Mike grabbed his mandolin and completely ripped up the stage with a sweet "Good Times Around the Bend" and then the whole band really poured it on until the end of the set with a live and kicking "Singing Songs." There was no end to this jam and it flowed nicely into a great "Shine" that was rockin' right off the charts.
The sun went down right about this time as the band left the stage in the warm twilight and the crowd lit up and the world got still. The break was short, but the night was black as the band climbed the stage in a beeline for their instruments with an air of purpose about them. This collective confidence was surely intent on the feat of delivering the literary and musical genius of one Robert Zimmerman to this expectant crowd. It came like quiet thunder and sent shivers up my spine as the Cheese busted out "Tom Thumb's Blues" for the second set opener. The "Impression" was not lost on the crowd as we were all "Sitting On Top Of The World" after such incredible jamming. The last song of the set was "Smile" and everybody was undoubtedly grinning from ear to ear as the band left the stage. They came back out after a minute or so and did "Chameleon" for an encore. The evening's end was heralded by a grand finale of spectacular fireworks that lit up the night sky and ended this party with a bang. Thanks for reading and we'll see ya at the shows.
