ROCKTIME PRESENTS
TOM PETTY AND THE HEARTBREAKERS
7/29/2006
AT
CLARK COUNTY AMPHITHEATRE
RIDGEFIELD, WA.
I wanna tell you a little story, about a young boy who grew up in Florida,
by the name of Tom Petty. I can't say exactly where, and I can't say exactly
when, but sometime around the age of ten, this boy met a man who played
guitar. This man sang songs for people and they would come from miles around
just to catch a glimpse of his brilliance. Folks had admired him for many
moons, across the miles, and across the oceans. This young boy got to shake
his hand, and in that moment his whole life changed. That man was Elvis
Presley, Tom knew right then and right there, that his destiny now lied
in the tracks of that man. Later on, at the age of seventeen, Tom left
Florida behind and moved Los Angeles with Benmont Tench and Mike Campbell.
A high school dropout, Tom Petty to was way to cool for school, he and
his bandmates headed to California to pick up a record contract. Which
they did, but the band fell apart and the record company just wanted to
keep Tom signed on contract. Five years later, Mike and Benmont were playing
with bassist Ron Blair and drummer Stan Lynch in a band called the Heartbreakers,
and the rest is hisstory, get it "his story."
Now, I wanna tell ya about a concert, not just any concert. I'm talking
'bout a Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers concert. But, not just any old
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers concert, the realization of a dream is
what I'm talking about. You know when you visualize something in your head,
like a crazy fantasy. Like if you where listening to the radio and "Stop
Dragging My Heart Around" came on and you thought to yourself now that
would be something, "Really something," to see those two sing that song
live in concert. I have to admit I have had that deranged thought come
into my head every time I have heard that song, ever since the first time
I saw Tom Petty live at the Fillmore in 1997. I had a copy of Wildflowers
that I kept in my car player for six months, listened to it every day and
I never got tired of it. I picked it up used at the record store just because
all the Tom Petty I had heard on the radio was great. I think that was
the day I realized that radio sucks y'all. I found all the songs to be
incredible works of art, and the vast majority were completely forsaken
by the radio dj's. So, I fall in love with Tom Petty's music and start
picking up his catalogue, and the rest is my story. Then, I'm right there
in the front row at the Fillmore looking up at Tom and the Heartbreakers
live in concert for the first time, and my whole life changed. I was lucky
enough to see seven shows in the first run and three in the second run.
But, that's not the concert I'm talking about, don't let me get off on
a rant. I could talk about those two runs (1997 - 20 shows, 1999 - 7 shows)
at the Fillmore west for hours, and not let you get a word in edgwise.
I'm supposed to be talking about that fanatical unimaginable concert that
would never happen in a million years, you know, the crazy fantasy concert
with Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty on the same stage at the same time singing
their famous duet. Anyway, to tell the truth , I never thought this rock
and roll fantasy was going to come true. To my utter surprise and delight,
the gods delivered and it happened, a thought became a question, the question
evolved into a decision, the decision spurned a vision, the vision a rumor,
and a rumor turned into a perfect performance, and that performance was
followed by another one, and it's really true. Stevie Nicks is really playing
with Tom Petty on this Summer tour and its still happening all summer long!!
Details of this memorable concert to follow, but get your tickets NOW before
your local venue sells out!!

Keep this on the down low, or the tickets will all be gone, and you'll
be missing the show. This show was the BEST Tom Petty show I have ever
seen, by far. I've been fortunate enough to see Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
nearly twenty times, each time weighing heavy in merit. I've seen him share
the stage with John Lee Hooker, and Bo Diddley, and Roger McGuinn, and
a few others. This is definitely a Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers concert,
but Stevie Nicks did her best not to steal the show from Mr. Tom Petty.
Tom came on stage strutting the finest hipster wear and ready to dual,
his moves were polished like the white house silver. Every turn and sway,
smile and nod, a smoothly calculated and deftly executed movement of rock
and roll royalty in motion. I've seen the Stones a few times, and Mick
does his thing, he exudes this cooly confident demeanor that makes his
body move in a manner that lends to an illusion of one whose feet seem
to barely touch the ground. Well, last night outside of Portland, Oregon,
Tom Petty had that same swagger as Mick does. He was in the zone, baby!
My guess is if you are a rock and roll star, you bring your A-game when
you know Stevie Nicks is going to be backing you up! Because you know Stevie
is going to bring it on!
The Amphitheatre at Clark County is a fantastic setting for a show, mellow
crowd, no worries, a perfect place to catch a show. I highly reccomend
seeing a show there anytime. Traffic leaving the venue was a little jammed,
but if that bothers you, there are always plenty of kind people with like
interests to help pass the time waiting for the parking lot to clear. The
amphitheater has a great reserved section and a large lawn area, a place
for everyone, family, and all.
